In honor of World Mental Health Day, the 31-year-old sat down with her organization Wondermind for an interview regarding her mental health and how it affects her. The Only Murders In The Building star has always been very open when it comes to these topics, and revealed on Tuesday when she’s “taking a mental health day” the first thing she does is hit up her 10-year-old sister Gracie Teefey:

“[My favorite thing is] spending time with my little sister, Gracie.”

The Lose You To Love Me singer went on to say despite their age difference, she learns a lot from her lil sis:

“She’s so innocent and pure. She helps me keep perspective on life. It’s funny because she’s 10; I am 31, and even with such a big age gap I love her advice. She is very wise.”

Selly also explained how she knows pretty early on in the day when she needs a break, so she knows when she needs some sister time:

“Usually, the first 10 minutes of the day I can kind of gauge how my day will go. Sometimes I just must accept it’s going to be a bad day and that’s OK. We all have bad days.”

The Single Soon songstress has always been close with Gracie, who was born when she was already 21 years old. She’s the daughter of her mom Mandy Teefey and her step dad Brian Teefey. Selena also has another little sister she can spend time with, 7-year-old Victoria, daughter of her dad Rick Gomez and her step mom Sara Gomez. We absolutely love the relationship she shares with her family!

She remembered meeting the Disney Channel alum when Selena was working on Wizards of Waverly Place, and Francia was on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She explained how at the time, they got to know each other while visiting kids at a children’s hospital, and soon found out they had a lot in common:

“We started talking, we both had boyfriends at the time, we started kiki-ing. Around the time that my boyfriend and I broke up, and [she] and her boyfriend broke up, she called me and was like, ‘I am going through some stuff … I am going through a breakup.’ I was like, ‘Girl, me too,’ and we were just inseparable after that ever since.”

Fast forward a few years, and Francia offered up her kidney for the Rare Beauty founder, who was suffering from lupus:

“We trauma-bonded, which is beautiful, but also it can get rocky and tricky. People grow, relationships change. Obviously, I treat her like my little sister, she treats me like her older sister. I don’t know any relationship that’s perfect.”

She added that when her and Selena’s “situation came up,” she “never pictured it” happening, but that she has “never regretted” donating her kidney. She also wanted to clarify their beef “had nothing to do with the kidney,” and that she needed to “take some time for [herself] and figure out what the hell was going on.” Francia added:

“I am a different person today than I was last year or even when I turned 30. I’m 35 now. Even when Selena turned 30, I’m like, ‘It’s different, isn’t it?’ and she was like, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Welcome to your 30s. Now we can get to know each other again.’”

During an interview with Fast Company published on Tuesday, the 31-year-old reflected on her time in the limelight thus far, and how following her lupus diagnosis at 24, things started to really switch gears for her.

She recalled that the year after undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017, she took herself on an Australian getaway, where paparazzi snapped pics of her in a bikini — showing off scars from the life-saving surgery and — crucially — a more mature body. At the time, fans flooded the former Disney star with body shaming comments, which was something that she had already been struggling with on top of her health crisis.

She recalled that before she’d “had a teenager’s body,” but during a fitting for a fashion magazine around the same time, “none of the sample sizes were fitting.” She shared that it made her “feel embarrassed,” especially with all the toxicity from internet critics. The Only Murders in the Building star added that at that time, she had also just gone through a breakup with ex Justin Bieber, which made things even harder:

“I had just gotten my heart broken. I didn’t need to see what everyone was doing. Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I’d see on Instagram.”

She remembered thinking at the time:

“‘Wow, I wish my body looked like that.’”

“How unrealistic is it to expect a normal woman’s body not to change?”

In an interview published on Tuesday with Fast Company, the 31-year-old actress explained that she never expected to have such a large platform – especially one where she could help others struggling with mental health. Although it is intimidating for her at times, Selena refuses to stay silent on this matter. Instead, the Only Murders in the Building star wants to use the reach she has now in any way she can in the hopes that these important conversations on mental health can “lead to something healing.” She shared with the outlet:

“When I was younger, I thought I could save the world. It breaks my heart to hear a girl come up to me and say, ‘I was so close to taking my life, but when I watched your documentary, I couldn’t imagine doing that anymore.’ That’s the coolest gift, but yeah, look at me… It’s crazy to have that responsibility.”

As you may know, the documentary she’s talking about is Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me. She gave fans some insight into the highs and lows of her life – including her diagnosis with bipolar disorder and struggles with lupus. When discussing why she had been so vulnerable on camera with fans, Selena expressed to the outlet:

“I wanted there to be a conversation started. I wasn’t ashamed, and I wanted it to lead to something healing.”

Love that. But being candid wasn’t always an easy thing for her to do. Looking back, Selly said she grew up as a “people pleaser.” So when she stepped into the spotlight at a young age, the Slow Down singer initially had a tough time with younger fans looking up to her as a role model. In fact, Selena thought it would be “damaging” if she got too real with everyone, especially about her bipolar diagnosis:

“I didn’t know who I was. Having that responsibility would make me walk on eggshells a lot. I thought maybe it would be damaging to tell people who I am. It started to become a threat that freaked me out. Well, if you’re not right, then you can’t work.”

Obviously, Selena has gotten over those fears over time and has become more transparent than ever. And after experiencing a “really hard season” of life, she’s not only found relief when it comes to her bipolar diagnosis, but she’s more than OK with getting vulnerable with fans:

“I’ve never promised anyone that I’ll never have a bad day again. I’ve always been honest with my fans. Even when I take breaks from social media, I’ll say I’m taking a break.”
